1st you join to the faction as a mercenary group. While you are fought against the enemy nations and prove your loyalty for your faction then you can go ask to pledge an oath for faction leader. Key difference is you are not rewarded fiefs as a mercenary. i am new to the game but this is my current understanding of it based of of my experianceG70D.
